Design and Technology
"Design is a funny word, some people think it means how something looks, but of course, if you dig deeper,
it’s really how it works." - Steve Jobs.
Design and Technology involves two important elements - learning about the designed and made world and how things work, and learning to design and make functional products for particular purposes and users.
At Rose Hill our DT curriculum aims to inspire pupils to create quality products by combining their design and making skills with knowledge and understanding of key processes. We will develop children’s skills and knowledge in design, structures, mechanisms, electrical control and a range of materials, including food.
Classroom experiences encourage them to think about important issues whilst stimulating creativity throughout the whole process. Interwoven into all of this we ask the children to consider how to practise effective health and safety.
Each term, children are able to create a product linked to one of the key areas. They will be asked to explore and evaluate existing products, including disassembling some examples. They will then use this knowledge to help them design and make their product, considering the best possible materials available to them and the safest possible techniques. Finally they will be asked to evaluate their product against their design and the existing products.
The children complete a school-designed booklet to showcase the work that they have completed. Please click below to see examples of these booklets and 'projects on a page'.
"If I found out how it worked, I could make it work better for me." - Joe, Year 6.
